Every year, days before St. Patrick’s Day I search my closet for something green to wear. St. Patrick’s Day—observed every March 17—is packed with parades, good luck charms and all things green. The event started as a religious holiday in Ireland, but over time it’s become a celebration of Irish culture.

Although many people think of St. Patrick’s Day as a time to dress in green and drink green beer, others think of it as a way to celebrate with green food. With that in mind, BOB wanted to share some of his favorite dessert recipes in Mason jars, in hopes you’ll try one this St. Patrick’s Day.

Did you know? More than 100 St. Patrick's Day parades are held across the United States, with New York City and Boston being home to the largest celebrations.

    Cake in a Jar

Cake in a Jar by A Million Moments

This cake in a jar recipe by A Million Moments is another easy dessert that’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day, especially if you have a sweet tooth.

    Here’s what you need:

  • Mason jars
  • White cake mix
  • Eggs (according to cake mix)
  • Water (according to cake mix)
  • Vegetable oil (according to cake mix)
  • Green gel food coloring
  • Cream cheese icing
  • Green sprinkles
  • Chocolate chips

    Here’s how you make them:

  • First, make the cake batter according to the instructions on the box. Combine your cake batter with the green gel food coloring. You’ll want to add the green gel color slowly so you don’t oversaturate the batter.
  • Pour the batter into a pan and smooth the surface with a spatula, making the cake layer approximately one-inch thick. Bake your cake according to the instructions on the box. After your cake is finished cooking, let it cool for 15-20 minutes.
  • Once your cake is cooled, flip it upside down onto a cutting board. Use the lid from your jar to cut out your cake circles. Cut out as many cake circles that your cake will allow.
  • Put your first layer of cake in the jar. Be sure to lay it flat, so the layers look nice. If your piece of cake is bigger than the jar opening, slightly fold it to get it past the rim. Add a layer of cream cheese icing. Repeat this process of a layer of cake and a layer of icing, until you’ve built it up to the rim of the jar. Add one final layer of icing to the top.
  • Top it off with some green sprinkles and chocolate chips and enjoy!
